LLocals : Those living in S.A.

So you think you are ready to ride a scooter. Your car is in the shop and you’re thinking about the scooter life for yourself.

Or maybe you have a scooter or bike and need a bike that’s small enough to manoeuvre around the K53 test track and yet big enough to qualify you for a full Class A driver’s license. If so, then you’ll find your answers here.

SOME POINTERS FOR THE NEWBIES

If you can ride a bicycle then you can ride a scooter. Left hand – front brake, right hand – back brake & accelerator. Just twist and go. It’s that simple. All scooter hire shops do supply you with a helmet. Additional riding gear is also available usually at an additional charge.

Scooters are automatic. They only have one gear. The engine is connected to a flywheel that contracts and tightens the drive belt, increasing the speed.

There are also Scooters available with semi automatic gear boxes. A semi automatic scooter has the same setup as a bike. Right hand – front brake & accelerator, right foot - back break. Select the gear with your left foot and go. Semi automatic scooters have no clutch. These scooters usually come with 4 gears and have quite an advantage over the automatics when it comes to hilly terrain.

Always obey the rules of the road. If you are in the wrong - you’ll be the one coming off second best.

Scooters and bikes are made for the road, unless otherwise specified. Do not drive on beaches, pavements, gardens, parks or any other place where cars are not allowed. (Remember, a small car like a Tata Indica can still do a lot more off-road than a scooter can. Don’t tell Jeremy Clarkson. :-)

Remember to book well in advance as availability is sometimes limited.

Enjoy the ride.
